A North American species found in the wild from anywhere between Indiana and Texas. The violet purple flowers are urn shaped and nodding about 2cm long the flowering period is from July until first frost with me and the seed heads, which are freely produced, are themselves decorative. It makes a good garden plant and grows well in most situations. Hard prune in winter.
Has had a large number of Synonyms over the years but Clematis pitcherii appears to have been in cultivation since around 1827.
