The term "Aspect" refers to the direction a bit of garden is facing for example a fence or wall that faces the noon day sun is south facing and is said to have a "Southerly Aspect"

Some plants grow well in any aspect but others will be more demanding so a clear idea of how sunny an area is will help with choosing plants.

A related issue is shade, it is often important to determine what is causing the shade. For example the shade on a North facing wall can be coped with by a number of good flowering climbers such as Clematis and Roses (not all but most) because the light levels in summer are good, while the shade from overhanging trees is quite different, here woodland plants are the order of the day as summer shade levels will be high.
