Erythrina crista-galli

Erythrina crista-galli is basically a tropical tree but in the right spot will behave like a herbaceous woody perennial. In the UK it dies to the ground each winter sending up strong annual stems from a woody base which will flower in late summer, for this to happen it does need the benefit of a warm wall and some ground protection (mulch) in winter to give it a long enough growing season. There are good specimens at the "Garden House" on the edge of Dartmoor and at the RHS gardens at Rosemoor in north Devon.
