Tibouchina urvilleana

This evergreen shrub has wonderful ribbed and hairy leaves the upper stems and buds are red and the flowers deep purple about 3" across, the flowering period is late summer through winter. It will not tolerate frost and needs winter protection (min +1c) , but I have found that putting it out in summer, increases the flowering, helps keep the shrub bushy, and most important intensifies the colours. Cut back hard in spring to prevent legginess. Planted in the ground this comes back from the roots even after a -9c winter but is so slow that it never reaches flowering size.

Introduced from Southern Brazil in 1864
